"The Haven"
Parklands new Community Centre is now open and our residents are enjoying the facilities. The Library has a comfortable and elegant reading area. The shelves are starting to fill with books and board games and it even has an eReader with a vast selections of books available. We are seeking more books for our Library.
The Pool and Spa have been receiving a great workout from residents and family in these very pleasant Queensland summer days. The pool and spa are solar heated so the water temperature is very pleasant.
The first of the equipment has arrived for the Fitmness Room. The pool table has found a few friends amongst the male residents.
The indoor bowls mat is still waiting for its first game.
The Bar is to be tested today with the Christmas Party for Torbay Constructions, our building arm that has built this beautiful building.
An open day for the resident of Torbay-Torquay is to be held on the 19 December.
The Official Opening of the building will be held in early February 2012.

FEDERAL GOVN REDUCES VALUE OF AGED CARE SUBSIDIES
The following is a copy of an email sent to Senator Hogg (ALP) and Senator Bob Brown (Greens). At the bottom of this email is a copy of our Media Release.
Senator Brown/ Senator Hogg,
We are disgusted that the Gillard Government has seen fit to reduce the value of residential aged care subsidies by another 4 to 5% with effect from 1 July. Operating costs have increased by a minimum of 6 to 7%, especially in regional Australia, so to increase subsidies by 1.9% means that the value of aged care subsidies have decreased by at least 4 to 5%.
This will have a disastrous affect on the lives of nursing home residents and staff who will again wear the brunt of the inevitable cost cutting. The Federal Government is fully aware that more than half of the aged care industry is operating at a loss and wages are already the lowest of any industry. Nurse's wages are more than 30% lower than the public sector. These are known facts. There is no justification to wait for the response to the Productivity Commission report before taking interim action to correct this situation.
As a consequence of this decision of the Gillard Government we have, regrettably, stopped work on our application for 40 additional high care places in the current ACAR Round. This was not an easy decision and weighs heavily on us as we face the people needing high care on a daily basis.
We are to start building an additional 20 residential care places in January. This work is now on hold while we review the financial implications of this reduction in subsidies. A further reduction in subsidy value of 4 to 5 % next year, based on the existing COPO Index, is also a distinct possibility and will be factored into our review.
This is a heavy cost for our community to pay.
We call on you to put in place interim relief to correct this despicable act on nursing home residents and their carers. It requires political action and cannot be deferred to bureaucrats. The long term solution will come from the Productivity Commission report but you must act now to stop the reduction in value of aged care subsidies.
